Lights, Camera, Adoption!

As the new kid on block at Enabling Technologies, I am absorbing as much information as I can. As I learn more about this company and what we do, I draw upon my own experiences of software or telephony implementation. I think about the tasks and actions that other organizations I have been involved have taken when implementing a large-scale technology. What stands out the most to me is change management practices and how crucial they are in a companywide implementation.

I was with a part of an organization that upgraded to Office 365. While this was a huge implementation to the organization (and much needed), no one knew it was coming. Once implemented, the entire organization received a simple email communication that explained Office 365 was here. That was it; no information on why it was implemented, what strategic goal the implementation aligned with, what was in it for us as the end user, or support resources.

Reflecting on the experience, the company missed the mark when it came to a successful implementation due to a lack of change management activities. Taking the time to develop a change management strategy is paramount to the end users. Preparing end users for the implementation eases the anxiety of “change” coming to the organization. People fear alteration to their existing routines at work and may be resistant to the implementation. Having a solid change management plan in place can alleviate (if not eliminate) the hesitation or anxiety the end user may experience by helping them see what is in it for them. Providing a level of training and/or support resources to assist all levels of end users will give them a sense of comfort knowing the organization embraces employee growth through new technology. Communicating timelines through various channels and encouraging feedback from end users strengthen the employer to employee relationship.
