Why Choose a Fractional CIO - Part 2 - Strategic Networks

VCIO topper

Why choose a Fractional CIO to assist your Executive Team or Board of Directors?

“The key business benefit of retaining a Fractional CIO is that they provide the same expertise and capability of a full-time CIO without the associated level of overhead and benefits associated with adding another top-level executive.”

There are some key differentiators when contracting a Fractional CIO. In this second of a three-part blog I’d like to focus on one of those key differentiators.

A Network of Strategic Partners

In working with small and medium sized non-profit organizations as a consultant, I like to reinforce the concept of a strategic network of best in class service providers to better help those organizations benefit from the synergies that arise when a team of great people work together. Every organization has its own set of challenges, and most struggle with aligning internal technology with business objectives. I’ve refined the recipe over the years and can help you.

So, how does it work? The modern world is heavily reliant on technology and no business can hope to succeed without strategic technology partners.

  • The first step, once those areas where technology can provide a competitive advantage, or those operational areas of your business need refinement are identified, is to identify your strategic technology partner.
  • The second step is to negotiate your terms into a contract or agreement.
  • The third step, like any major function of your business, you’ll need to allocate first-class resources to develop the relationship.

The value proposition is about; 1) bringing a strategic network of best in class providers to the table, 2) experienced at contract negotiation, and 3) being that first-class resource to ensure your partnership and/or project is successful.

In summary, it’s all about great people being intertwined working together toward a common goal. When it comes together, it’s like an incredibly tasty pretzel. Both simple and complex in it’s make up and design.

Stay tuned for the third and final part of this blog, where I’ll talk about how a Fractional CIO can provide guidance in delivering a world class information technology environment for your staff while lowering your operational costs.
