Publishing 3rd Party Apps in Teams for Certain Users

With Teams’ app permission policies, you can control what apps are available to specific users. You can specify which apps are available to your org in its entirety, and/or create specific app permission policies and assign users into a more restrictive policy. You can also make specific apps for specific workgroups appear in their left-hand menu, improving visibility and adoption apps for users that need them.

Take as an example, you wish to block all third-party apps and allow specific apps from Microsoft for the HR team in your organization. First, you would go to the Manage apps page and make sure that the apps that you want to allow for the HR team are allowed at the org level. Then, you will create a custom policy named HR App Permission Policy, set it to block and allow the apps that you want, and assign it to users on the HR team.

Step 1 is to define which apps your org will allow versus block. This is done in the Teams Apps settings in the admin center. Under app permission policies, you can add new policies to allow/block.

The next step is to assign a custom app permission policy to users. You will see an easy “Manage Users” button to use for that on the App Permission policy screen, shown at top right.

After clicking on the Manage Users button, you are brought to the page where you can add users.

Finally, you can pin that app to the user’s Teams menu for easy maneuvering under “App Setup Policies.” In the example below, you can see how “Enabling Studio” will appear underneath the standard apps that are pinned in the navigation bar.
